School Introduction

Peking University features a time-honored tradition of agronomical research. In 1905, the University of Agricultural Sciences was established by the Imperial University of Peking; whilein 1945 after the victory of the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, Peking University decided to rebuild its School of Agricultural Sciences on the basis of the original School of Agronomy, Peking University, and appointed Prof. Yu Dafu as the dean. Within a few years time, the School of Agronomy, Peking University appointed numerous renowned agronomists including Xiong Dashi, Li Xianwen, Li Jingjun, Chen Huakui, Li Lianjie, Cai Xu, Wu Zhongxian, etc. for its teaching positions in ten departments, namely Department of Agronomy, Department of Horticulture, Department of Forestry, Department of Zootechnics, Department of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Agricultural Economy, Department of Entomology, Department of Phytopathology, Department of Agricultural Chemistry and Department of Soil and Fertilizer Sciences. The beginning of 1946 witnessed the founding of the School of Agricultural Sciences, University of Southwest Union, followed by the independence of the School of Agricultural Sciences, Peking University in the same year. By 1949, the School of Agricultural Sciences, Peking University had become the top school of agricultural sciences in China in terms of size, scale of research fields and expertise of faculty.

In 1949, School of Agriculture Sciences, Peking University, School of Agricultural Sciences, Tsinghua University and School of Agricultural Sciences, North China University consolidated to form Beijing University of Agricultural Sciences; yet research in agricultural sciences never ceased in Peking University, where frontier branches as well as core disciplines of agricultural sciences were profusely studied in applied chemistry, biotechnology and applied microbiology, toxicology, medical chemistry, educational sciences and geriatrics, with publications of papers in agricultural sciences ranking among the top 1% of ESI and cite per article reaching 7.2 on average.

China’s social and economic development on a higher level has highlighted the importance of Advanced agriculture. Accelerated development of Advanced agriculture is a key factor in the transformation of economic development model and the overall construction of a better-off society, which is required by the need of improved comprehensive productivity of agriculture, higher income for farmers and construction of socialist new countryside. With “synchronization of the four -izations” proposed in the report to the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, it is clearly stated that “we shall stick to the path of new industrialization, informatization, urbanization and agricultural Advancedization with Chinese characteristics, facilitating in-depth integration of informatization and industrialization, healthy interaction between industrialization and urbanization and intercoordination of urbanization and agriculturalAdvancedization, hence contributing to the synchronized development of industrialization, informatization, urbanization and agricultural Advancedization.”

In this context, to meet the need for developing Advanced agriculture in China, Peking University decided to establish School of Advanced Agriculture Sciences, Peking University in October 2014, aiming at frontier agricultural research and talent training featuring high starting point, high standard and world class by combining major needs of the country and discipline advantages of Peking University.

As a teaching and research institution with independent organizational position of Peking University, School of Advanced Agriculture Sciences focuses on interdisciplinary subjects in agriculture and aims at solving key issues in the development of agricultural Advancedization, highlighting its school-running characteristics. School of Advanced Agricultural Sciences is committed to constructing a world-class institute of Advanced agricultural technologies and management, integrating study, research, production and management while combining theory, application, strategy, policy, planning research, education and training of medium- and high-end professionals and consulting services, hence providing support in basic theory, frontier and core technologies, human resources and policy consulting for the development and construction of China’s new countryside.

School of Advanced Agriculture Sciences of Peking University will focus on crop genetics and breeding, agricultural technology, agricultural economics and management science, food safety and nutritional science, etc.
